Within a couple of days of moving content including an SEO update from one domain to another via a 301 redirect the new location was ranking higher than the old webpage.

That’s a nice SERPs improvement for SEO changes and it should improve as the rank from the old webpage is passed to the new webpage via the 301 redirect.
